Thousands feel 5.4 magnitude quake centred near Taranaki town

The quake struck 10 km south-west of Waverley.

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake centred near Waverley in south Taranaki has been felt by thousands of people this morning.

According to GeoNet, more than 14,000 people reported feeling the "light" earthquake, which struck at 8.29am.

It was located 10km south-west of Waverley at a depth of 107km.

People across the central and lower North Island, and top of the South Island, have reported feeling it.
