New Zealand’s most popular baby names for 2025 have been revealed, with parents once again favouring familiar choices.
For the third year running, Noah has topped the list for boys, with 244 babies given the name in 2025.
Close behind was Luca, chosen by 236 parents, while Oliver, George, Theodore, Leo, Charlie, Jack, Elijah, and Theo rounded out the top 10.
For girls, Isla retained its place at number one, with 179 registrations, continuing a strong run that has seen it feature in the top three every year since 2016.
Charlotte followed closely in second place, with 178 babies given the name.
The rest of the girls’ top 10 featured Amelia, Hazel, Olivia, Lily, Lucy, Mila, Aria, and Mia.
Minister of Internal Affairs Brooke van Velden said the figures highlighted both creativity and consistency among New Zealand parents.
"With over 58,000 births registered this year and 19,457 unique first names, it’s clear that while parents love individuality, established names like Noah and Isla continue to dominate," she said.
"These trends give us fascinating snapshots of Kiwi culture and how enduring favourites shape the names we choose for the next generation."
Some names have shown staying power over decades. Olivia first entered the top 10 in 1994 and has remained there ever since, while Jack has featured every year since 1998.
"While it’s interesting to see which names are trending, the most important step for parents is making sure their baby’s name is officially registered," van Velden said.
The Department of Internal Affairs recommended registering newborns within the first two months of birth, with the SmartStart service making the process free and simple.
