French prisoners escape jail using saw and bedsheets

Two French prisoners have managed to pull off an escape from jail using only a saw and bedsheets, a prosecutor said overnight.

Dijon prosecutor Olivier Caracotch said that the pair "seem to have sawn through bars" at the facility in the eastern city of Dijon, and "fled using bed sheets", CBS reports.

He did not provide detail as to how the bedsheets were used in the method of escape.

The fugitives were a 19-year-old man held since October 2024 for attempted murder in a drug-related case, and a 32-year-old man incarcerated since 2023 over threats and violence against a partner.

Union official Ahmed Saih, who represents prison officers at the facility, said the inmates used "old-fashioned, manual saw blades".

It was the second such incident in recent weeks, following another escape in the western city of Rennes.

A 37-year-old convict, who was supposed to be serving time until early 2027 for theft, fled during an outing with fellow prisoners to the city's planetarium.

According to a Council of Europe report published in July, France has one of the worst prison overcrowding rankings in Europe, the third worst after Slovenia and Cyprus.
