Residents urged to stay inside as large recycling fire burns in Auckland

Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) was called to the rubbish fire in Waiuku, Auckland last night just before 11pm.

Residents are being warned to stay inside, and keep doors and windows shut, as a large fire burns at a recycling plant in Auckland's Waiuku.

It said the fire was burning plastic that was set to be recycled.

The large fire broke out in Auckland's Waiuku overnight.

"We ask people in the vicinity of the fire to keep windows and doors shut and stay inside if possible. Remember to also keep the ventilation systems in your house and car turned off," a FENZ spokesperson said.

At its peak there were around 60 firefighters at the scene from 16 trucks, with seven crews still in attendance this morning.

"We also advise people in the affected area to wear a face mask or cover their nose and mouth with clothing if going outside for essential reasons.

The large fire broke out in Auckland's Waiuku overnight.

Road closures

In a post to social media, Waiuku Volunteer Fire Brigade said several roads would remain closed until further notice including Kitchener Rd between Racecourse Rd and Queen Street.

It also said there was no access to View Rd from Kitchener Rd, and that traffic trying to enter Kitchener Rd from King Street would be diverted up Queen Street and through the detours.

"Please stay clear of the area and follow any instructions from firefighters, police, or other personnel on scene," it said.
