Murder charge laid after man's death in central New Plymouth

A homicide investigation has been launched following the death of a man in New Plymouth last night.

Emergency services were called to the scene on St Aubyn St after a report of an altercation occurring shortly before 7pm.

On police arrival, a man was found with critical injuries.

"CPR was performed, however he died at the scene," a police spokesperson said.

A 44-year-old man was arrested and has been charged with murder.

He was due to appear in the New Plymouth District Court today.

Another person was arrested but released without charge.

"A scene guard has been in place overnight, and cordons will remain in place today while a scene examination is carried out," police said.

New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) said part of St Aubyn St, between Egmont St and Liardet St, remained closed this morning, and motorists should avoid the area if possible, or expect delays.

"Continue using an alternative route," it said online.

Police urged anyone who may have witnessed this incident unfolding, or who has information about those involved to contact 105.
