Kiwi Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson will start deep in the pack for the Brazil Grand Prix Sprint race, after qualifying 17th.

The Racing Bulls driver missed the chance to post a second flying lap in the first stage of qualifying (SQ1) and was knocked out.

Speaking to media after the race, Lawson said the Racing Bulls team "messed up the timing completely" during qualifying.

"We came out of the garage for the second run, and everyone was slowing down at the pit exit. I ran out of time.

"I'm sure we'll review it, we definitely didn't need to take the risk.

"The car's been very quick, so it's pretty frustrating."

It adds to what’s been a frustrating run for the 23-year-old Kiwi, whose last race at the Mexican Grand Prix ended in disappointment after he was forced to retire less than 10 laps in.

The qualifying result comes at a time where scoring points is crucial for Lawson, with his future in the sport yet to be decided by Red Bull.

Lawson qualified one place ahead of Red Bull's Yuki Tsunoda, who is understood to be Lawson's competition for a seat next year.

Title leader Lando Norris secured pole position around the challenging Interlagos circuit, beating out Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli and teammate Oscar Piastri.

Mercedes' George Russel will line up fourth on the grid, with Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso rounding out the top five.

The Brazil Grand Prix Sprint race will take place on Sunday (3am NZT).
