Two killed, four injured in terror attack at Manchester synagogue
An assailant drove a car into people outside a synagogue in Manchester and then began stabbing them, killing two and seriously wounding four others.
The terrorist attack took place on Yom Kippur, the day of atonement and the most solemn day in the Jewish calendar. Police said the two people killed were Jewish.
Officers shot and killed the suspect outside Manchester shortly after. Police have since revealed the identity of the man. A motive behind the attack is still unknown.
Govt unveils defence industry push to double spending, grow Kiwi firms
The Government has unveiled a new Defence Industry Strategy aimed at strengthening New Zealand's defence supply chain and growing local businesses as part of a plan to double defence spending within eight years.
The strategy followed the 2025 Defence Capability Plan released in April, which committed $12 billion over the next four years.
Ruapehu candidate gives up campaigning after 'brutal' online abuse
A candidate in the Ruapehu local election has dropped out after a 'devastating' experience involving verbal abuse and threats from members of the public.
"It's stopped me going anywhere on my own and I’m scared of leaving my car in the main street. I’ve given up campaigning," the candidate said.
Clive Manley of the Ruapehu District Council called the behaviour "unacceptable" and said it "undermines the democratic process".
