Hikers suffering 'debilitating' mushroom high rescued in New York

A hiker escorted from the Slide Mountain Wilderness after consuming magic mushrooms.

Four hikers in New York have been rescued after suffering a "debilitating high" from magic mushrooms.

The group were rescued in the Slide Mountain Wilderness, a 19,200ha park in the Catskill Forest Preserve, on August 29, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers said.

"The original caller admitted the group had consumed mushrooms and one of them was experiencing a debilitating high," the agency told NBC News in a statement.

Psilocybin, also known as magic mushrooms (file image).

Side-effects of consuming the hallucinogen include numbness; increased heart rate and blood pressure; muscle weakness and twitching, or convulsions; sweating, followed by chills and shivering; and exaggerated reflexes.

The hikers escorted to the trailhead where they were assessed by ambulance staff.

The state department said the group were then driven back to their rental lodging.

One of the hikers lost their car keys but they were found by rangers the following day under a log.
