Man arrested on suspicion of poisoning kids at UK summer camp

UK police have arrested a man suspected of poisoning children at a summer camp.

Leicestershire Police were sent to a summer camp on Monday (local time) after someone raised the alarm over several children feeling unwell.

They arrested a 76-year-old man who remains in custody.

Police said children at the camp were checked and eight taken to hospital as a precaution.

All have since been discharged.

"Detectives and uniformed officers remain in the area carrying out further inquiries and to establish the full circumstances of the incident as well as providing reassurance to the families and the local community," Assistant Chief Constable James Avery said.

According to CNN, Leicestershire Police has referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to look at the "circumstances of the initial police response" to the incident.

"Our assessment team has examined all available evidence and concluded the matter should be independently investigated by the IOPC," an IOPC spokesperson said.

"The investigation will look at whether there were any breaches of professional behaviour – namely a failure to carry out duties and responsibilities – that resulted in a delay in Leicestershire Police’s response to what was later declared a critical incident."
