Police issue warning to drivers over King's Birthday weekend

A vehicle of the New Zealand police has pulled over a vehicle for speeding in Cromwell in central Otago in the South Island.

Extra police patrols will be out on New Zealand roads this King's Birthday weekend.

Police are urging road users to take their time, drive to the conditions, and be patient during the June holiday to avoid "horrific" and preventable deaths.

Acting director of road policing Inspector Peter McKennie said too many families had lost loved ones in crashes this year.

“There's no excuse for anyone to drive dangerously or carelessly, endangering their lives or others regardless of day of the year."

New Zealand Transport Agency's website reported 139 provisional road deaths to date this year.

McKennie said it was a "tragedy" that many crashes attended by officers this year were preventable.

"It's horrific for families, friends, and first responders," he said. “Preventing those tragedies is what we're focused on, especially at long weekends when there are more people on the roads."

McKennie said extra police would be patrolling the roads "anywhere, anytime" from highways to back roads across the country.

"The four biggest factors in crashes, deaths and serious injuries involve restraints, impairment through the likes of alcohol and drugs, distractions such as cell phones, and speed."

He said a split-second decision could be the difference between life and death.

"We're doing our best, but need people to take greater responsibility on the road."

"We want everyone travelling on the roads over the weekend to be safe, and to help keep others on the road safe."

McKennie urged motorists to take their time, drive to the conditions, and be patient.

"Just because you’re a good driver, it doesn't mean the next person is. Drive in a manner and at a speed that allows you to respond safely to the unexpected.

"If you're on the road, do everything you can to keep yourself and others safe this long weekend."
