1 Roads, businesses hit by flash flooding amid Nelson downpour

Nelson Mayor Nick Smith said there had been torrential rain in the city since midnight.

"We've got a number of streets that are closed, we've had manholes burst, there are some shops that have had flooding into them."

More than 20 incidents were reported to Fire and Emergency NZ between 10.15am and 11am this morning.

Former National MP Dame Marilyn Waring has gathered a group of female former MPs from across the political spectrum to hold a "people's select committee" on the Government's pay equity changes.

The unofficial committee was planning to hold its first submission on August 11 in Wellington.

She said: "I sat in a Parliament that was bedevilled by urgency under Muldoon... on many occasions. But my beef here is, where was the evidence?"

5 Liam Lawson claims career-best finish in Monaco

Kiwi Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson earned his first points of the season - and the best result of his career - in placing eighth.

He also helped teammate Isack Hadjar claim sixth place by lowering the pace and allowing the Frenchman to pit and get back on track without encountering traffic.

“It’s not often you have a plan and it executes perfectly and today to have done that is that great,” Lawson told F1TV afterwards.
