1 One person fatally shot at Whangārei reserve, second person critical
One person has died and a homicide investigation has been launched after a shooting at a waterfront reserve in Whangārei.
Police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward, in particular anyone who witnessed the incident.
"We understand this incident would have been unsettling for the wider community and we appreciate the assistance from the public during this time."
2 Landlord fined $20,000 over illegal boarding house breaches
Licensed real estate agent Angela Sun was found responsible by the Tenancy Tribunal for “multiple breaches” at a property she rented out in Takapuna.
Sunny Rental Limited, a company of which Sun is a director, was also found responsible for breaches at a separate property it rented out in Pinehill, also on Auckland's North Shore.
Issues at the properties included exposed wires and a lack of fire safety precautions.
3 Community rallies to help whānau displaced by Northland fire
The vegetation fire which began at Waipoua yesterday sits around 70 hectares in size, with a 4.5km perimeter.
As the fire battle continues, Waikarā Marae is providing respite to the community, offering kai and a place to stay for firefighters and impacted whānau.
Cheryl Tane told 1News the marae has received many donations for the evacuated families, and is now only accepting food, water, and vouchers.
4 Michelle Trachtenberg, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl star, dies
The 39-year-old actress was found "unconscious and unresponsive" at her residence in midtown Manhattan this morning.
The New York Medical Examiner is investigating the cause of death, police said.
In 2000, Trachtenberg joined the cast of Buffy, playing Dawn Summers, the younger sister of the title character played by Sarah Michelle Gellar between 2000 and 2003.
5 Government announces four-year parliamentary term legislation to be introduced
Coalition partners New Zealand First and ACT have both voiced support for four-year political terms, and the proposed Bill is modelled on the ACT Party's draft Constitution (Enabling a 4-Year Term) Amendment Bill.
The current three-year limit is entrenched — meaning it can only be overturned through a supermajority in Parliament or a referendum.
Otago University professor and legal expert Andrew Geddis told 1News he was "encouraged" by the Government's announced legislation.
ONE COSTLY FOUNTAIN DIP
Three visitors from New Zealand were stopped as they began to wade into the historic fountain in the heart of the Italian capital.
A spokesperson for Rome's Capital Police said one of the tourists, a 30-year-old man, broke free from the police and jumped in, leading to a fine of 500 euros (NZD$920).
"Alcohol was definitely involved," police told CNN.
