Princess Beatrice welcomes baby girl

Buckingham Palace has announced the safe arrival of Princess Beatrice’s second child, named Athena.

The baby girl was born on January 22 at 12.57pm at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London. She weighed 4 pounds and 5 ounces (2kg).

It is Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi's second child together - he has a son from a previous relationship.

According to the BBC, Athena was born several weeks early but is doing well.

In a post to Instagram, Mapelli Mozzi said Athena is “tiny and absolutely perfect”, and the family is “already completely besotted with her”.

Now 11th in line to the throne, Athena is the grandchild of Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, and Sarah, the Duchess of York.

In a post to X, the Duchess of York said: “She is already so adored and I'm incredibly blessed to be a granny once again. So proud of Edo, Beatrice and the rest of my little 5-a-side team.”

Athena, in ancient Greece, was the goddess of war, handicraft and wisdom.

The Royal Family said both Princess Beatrice and her daughter are doing well, and are spending time with Athena’s older siblings, Sienna and Wolfie, who is Mapelli Mozzi’s child from a previous relationship.

Both Princess Beatrice and Mapelli Mozzi thanked the hospital for their “wonderful care”. It is the same hospital where Sienna, her first child, was born in 2021.
