Cane and Perenara set for All Blacks farewell against Italy

November 22, 2024
Sam Cane is set to play his last match for the All Blacks this weekend against Italy.

The All Blacks' last Test match of their northern tour against Italy will also serve as the final game for two All Black veterans.

Sam Cane and TJ Perenara are set to make their final appearances in the black jersey in Turin on Sunday morning NZT.

Both players didn't feature in the All Blacks' 30-29 loss against France last week, with Cane ruled out due to a head injury.

Cane will make his 104th appearance for the All Blacks starting at openside, with TJ Perenara replacing Cortez Ratima on the bench to potentially earn his 89th cap in the black jersey.

Cane's return creates a loose forward reshuffle, with Wallace Sititi slipping back into blindside and Ardie Savea going to No.8.

There are two further changes in the forwards, with prop Ethan de Groot and lock Patrick Tuipulotu coming into the starting line-up to start at lock alongside captain Scott Barrett.

De Groot has missed the majority of the All Blacks' northern tour after he didn't meet "internal standards" ahead of their match against England and didn't make the matchday 23 in following weeks due to performance.

Ofa Tu'ungafasi and Fletcher Newell will provide prop cover and Tupou Vaa'i will move to the bench to cover lock.

Jordie Barrett has been ruled out with a knee injury which sees Anton Lienert-Brown start at second five-eighth and allows David Havili to come into the matchday 23 on the bench.

Cam Roigard and Beauden Barrett will once again start at nine and 10, with Lienert-Brown linking up with Rieko Ioane in the centres.

Mark Tele'a rejoins the back three alongisde Caleb Clarke and Will Jordan.

Tele'a has recovered from a hand injury to reclaim the right wing over Sevu Reece, who won't feature in any capacity against Italy.

All Blacks head coach Scott Robertson said he wants this match to be a fitting send off for both Cane and Perenara.

"As our first ever match in Turin, our final match of the 2024 Test season, and the farewell match for Sam and TJ, this will be a great occasion. We are determined to finish our season in a way that honours and celebrates the immense contribution that Sam and TJ have made to the black jersey.

"This Italy team has made a real impact on the international stage this year, with a strong showing in the Six Nations competition that included wins over Scotland and Wales and a draw against France. We know the passion this team will bring, so we are preparing for a physical and motivated Italy for our final Test of the tour."

The match will be played at the 41,000-seater Allianz Stadium in Turin, which is the home ground for prominent Italian football side Juventus FC.
