A man has been arrested and faces a number of charges after allegedly fleeing police across Auckland this morning.

The incident began when an SUV was signalled to stop on St Lukes Rd at 3.25am, police said.

A spokesperson said it led to the driver "fleeing across Auckland".

"The driver failed to stop and accelerated away from staff at speed," Inspector Alisse Robertson said.

"A pursuit was not initiated however Eagle continued to monitor the vehicle's whereabouts as it headed towards West Auckland.

"Spikes were successfully deployed, with the car continuing [on] rims on the motorway network back towards the central city," Robertson said.

Eventually, the car came to a stop on the Southern Motorway near Princes St in Ōtāhuhu shortly before 5.30am, she continued.

The driver, a 31-year-old man, was taken into custody.

"The man will be facing court on unrelated warrants to arrest, as well as new charges relating to his reckless behaviour this morning," Robertson said.

"His actions put the community in harm's way and it's fortunate that this matter could be resolved safely.

"The man's charges will include reckless driving and failing stop."

He will appear in Auckland District Court later today and "further charges cannot be ruled out".

A female passenger was also taken into custody, but she was later released without charge.
