1 JD Vance and Tim Walz's go head-to-head in Vice-Presidential debate

US Vice Presidential hopefuls Tim Walz and JD Vance squared off in what may be the last debate of the 2024 presidential campaign.

It was the first encounter between Minnesota's Democratic governor and Ohio's Republican senator, following last month's debate between the tops of their tickets, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.

The vice presidential hopefuls sparred over the violence in the Middle East, climate change and immigration.

2 Major bank cuts fixed mortgage rates, term deposits

ANZ has dropped most of its fixed mortgage rates, as well as some term deposit rates.

Starting today, all of the bank's standard mortgage rates (for those with less than 20% equity) and most of its special rates were dropped, with one-year terms seeing the biggest cuts.

3 Thunderstorms, heavy rain, strong winds and snow for parts of NZ

Many areas can expect thunderstorm-like conditions, including heavy rain and strong wind, from today, while heavy snow is also expected for southern parts of the South Island.

MetService has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Northland, Auckland and Great Barrier Island from 8pm tonight until 5am tomorrow morning.

It's also issued a heavy snow watch for Central Otago and the Queenstown Lakes District.

4 What to know about Iran's missile attack, Israel's Lebanon ground invasion

Iran launched almost 200 missiles at Israel overnight, causing scattered damage and fires from falling shrapnel, but Israeli authorities said there were no injuries. An Israeli security official said most of the missiles were intercepted, though some managed to land.

Israeli officials said Iran would pay a price for the strike.

The missile attack came after Israel said ground troops crossed into Lebanon, launching what the military described as a limited operation to root out Hezbollah fighters and infrastructure.

5 Gail Maney acquitted, Stephen Stone retrial ordered

Gail Maney and co-defendant Stephen Stone were convicted for the murder of 21-year-old Auckland man Deane Fuller-Sandys in 1999 and during a retrial in 2000.

Stone was also convicted of raping and murdering Leah Stephens, who the Crown said witnessed the Fuller-Sandys killing.

All convictions against Maney, Stone and two others related to two historical murder cases have been quashed.

Maney has been acquitted, while a retrial has been ordered for Stone.

Tim Southee has stepped down as Black Caps Test captain.

Tim Southee has stepped down as Black Caps Test captain, with Tom Latham taking on the role, starting with the upcoming three-Test tour of India.

Southee confirmed today that he would be leaving the role and said his decision is "best for the team".

"Captaining the Black Caps in a format that’s so special to me, has been an absolute honour and a privilege,” Southee said.
