1 Heavy rain, snow warnings in place as bad weather looms

The dry weather most of the country has been enjoying is coming to an end, with heavy rain and heavy snow forecast for some as an active front moves across the Tasman Sea.

From later today through to Thursday, rain is expected in western and northern parts of the country, while snow is forecast for the southern parts of the South Island.

2 Woman arrested, gun seized after Facebook Marketplace deal goes wrong

A woman has been arrested and a "modified pistol" seized after a man's bank card and phone were stolen in a Facebook Marketplace deal gone wrong.

The victim met a person at Auckland's Westgate around 1am, where the purchase was set to take place.

When the victim got into the alleged offender's vehicle, his phone and ATM card were allegedly stolen, police said.

3 Seaweed products recalled due to elevated arsenic levels

Multiple Tokyo Foods hijiki seaweed products are being recalled due to elevated levels of arsenic.

NZFS deputy director-general Vincent Arbuckle said the products contain hijiki, a type of seaweed "which is known to naturally have heightened levels of inorganic arsenic".

"The concern with these products is that they could have inorganic arsenic at levels that could make you sick."

Hijiki seaweed is not used in sushi products, or as a seaweed wrap, he said.

4 Israel says 'limited' operation in southern Lebanon has begun

The Israeli military said it has begun a "limited, localised" operation against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, opening a new front in its war against the Lebanese militant group.

In a brief announcement, it said it was striking Hezbollah targets in areas close to the Israeli border, and that air force and artillery units were carrying out attacks to support the ground forces.

It gave no details on how long the operation would last, but said the army had been training and preparing for months.
