Murder charge laid after inmate found dead at Auckland prison, thousands of Cantabrians without power after helicopter cuts lines, and Kris Kristofferson dies at 88.
1 Murder charge laid after inmate found dead at Mt Eden Corrections
The inmate, who can be named as Andrew Chan Chui, 36, was found dead in his cell at around 10am on Friday.
Corrections said the man had been in a double-bunked cell - the other prisoner who had been residing in the cell is now in a single cell.
Another inmate has been charged with Chan Chui's murder. A 23-year-old man will appear via Audio Visual Link in the Auckland District Court on October 3.
2 Thousands across Canterbury without power after helicopter cuts lines
The incident took place on transmission lines about halfway between Timaru and Tekapo around 10.25am.
Transpower said in a statement that crews are on site and will need to repair the lines before power can be restored.
"At this stage we estimate this will take 24-36 hours, but we will have a better view of when we can get power restored as work progresses," a spokesperson said.
3 Kris Kristofferson, singer-songwriter and actor, dies at 88
A Rhodes scholar with a deft writing style and rough charisma who became a country music superstar and A-list Hollywood actor, Kristofferson died at his home on Maui, Hawaii over the weekend, family spokeswoman Ebie McFarland said in an email.
He retired from performing and recording in 2021, making only occasional guest appearances on stage.
4 'Severe' midweek weather to end school holidays' sunny start
MetService meteorologist Lewis Ferris said Wednesday and Thursday were the “main risk period” for severe weather.
“Heavy Rain Watches are already in force for western and northern parts of the South Island.
“It’s likely some of these will be upgraded to Orange Warnings and areas in the North Island may be added.”
5 Air NZ to scrap significant regional route next year
Air New Zealand has announced it will cut its direct service between Wellington and Invercargill from January 19.
General manager Domestic Scott Carr said the decision came as the company had seen domestic demand "soften" in response to a "tough economic background".
"We are re-accommodating those who were already booked to travel.
"We know this change may cause inconvenience for some, but we want to assure our customers that we remain committed to connecting Invercargill to our wider network via the direct Christchurch and Auckland services."
