New Zealand are battling to stay alive in their second Test against Sri Lanka at Galle, trailling by 514 runs after their first innings on the third day.
The tourists were bundled out for just 88 in their first dig and now face a massive challenge to salvage anything from this World Test Championship fixture.
The home side dominated the Black Caps for the opening two days, piling on 602/5 declared, with centuries to Dinesh Chandimal (116), Kamindu Mendis (182no) and Kusual Mendis (106no), before removing NZ openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway cheaply before stumps.
That dominance continued this morning, with Kane Williamson gone for the addition of just two more runs. New Zealand lost three wickets for one run in seven balls, when nightwatchman Ajaz Patel, wicketkeeper Tom Blundell and allrounder Glenn Phillips succumbed quickly, leaving their team reeling at 53/7.
Rachin Ravindra and Patel combined for a 17-run fourth-wicket stand, before Mitch Santner and tailender Will O'Rourke added 20 for the final wicket. Santner was eventually the final wicket to fall, leading the scoring with 29, including four fours and a six, as the Kiwis capitulated to their lowest-ever Test score against Sri Lanka, which stood at 102 at Colombo in 1992.
Spinner Prabath Jayasuriya proved the destroyer for Sri Lanka, bamboozling the NZ batters to capture 6/42, while captain Dhananjaya de Silva snatched five catches in the slips.
The Black Caps have resumed their second innings and reached lunch at 3/1, with Latham out to the last ball of Nishan Peiris' opening over.
