1 Man with disability assaulted over mobility parking space

A sharp increase on fines issued to those who abuse disability car parks is on the way – and the news is being welcomed by those who utilise them fairly.

Johnny Kauwhata is among those celebrating. He uses a tokotoko, or walking stick on good days, and a walking frame on bad days.

The 33-year-old was recently punched in the head twice outside Countdown Kerikeri after asking an able-bodied man to not use a disability car park outside the store.

4 Tenants overcharged for Rotorua home in 'very poor state of repair' – tribunal

A Rotorua landlord has been fined and given a three-year restraining order for failing to "sufficiently maintain" a property while charging above market rate.

Investigators found the home failed to comply with healthy homes requirements, and the health of children living at the property was "impacted". 

The adjudicator noted the landlord made "deliberate decisions" around what maintenance to provide at the property.
