Black smoke that billowed over central Auckland during afternoon rush hour today was due to a rubbish fire, Fire and Emergency NZ says.

Video supplied to 1News showed a dark cloud of smoke flowing over the busy motorway network from an area near Hopetoun Bridge.

A photo from the scene also showed the source of the smoke appeared to be under a bridge, now confirmed as a rubbish fire.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesperson said it was "easily put out".
