A 28-year-old man has been arrested in relation to a shooting in Palmerston North earlier this month.
On August 13, Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thompson said officers responded to reports of a fight involving a firearm on Rangitikei St at around 11.30pm.
At the time police found a man "with an injury consistent with a gunshot wound" to the torso. He was taken to hospital.
Yesterday, police carried out a search of a Milson address where one of two men sought in connection to the incident was located and arrested.
"The 28-year-old man is set to appear in the Palmerston North District Court today, charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm," said Thompson.
He said officers were still actively searching for a 31-year-old man who they believed was also involved and urged him to "come forward to speak with us".
"We want to reassure the Palmerston North community that this type of offending is confined to a small group of individuals known to each other."
The victim has since been released from hospital and faces a long road to recovery, with Victim Support providing ongoing assistance.
Anyone with information could contact police on 105 or online.
Spate of shootings
The incident followed four other firearm incidents in Palmerston North in August, police said.
Those incidents "have all been evidentially-linked by police".
"On August 2 a firearm was discharged on Moheke Ave, and on August 3 a similar event occurred in Clyde Crescent," Ross said.
"On August 9 a police car was shot at while attempting to conduct a traffic stop on Tremaine Ave."
An 18-year-old Horowhenua woman was charged with using a firearm against law enforcement over the August 9 incident.
"On August 11 a police car was shot at in the suburb of Highbury," Ross continued.
"Three men were arrested and charged in relation to this incident, and three firearms were seized.
"Enquiries into these four incidents are ongoing and further charges will be laid."
Ross said police know the incidents are causing a "significant amount of concern".
"We want to reassure Palmerston North residents that this offending is confined to a small group of individuals who are known to each other, and police are working hard to ensure that all those involved are held to account."
