Charges over 'violent kidnapping and assault' of pair in Auckland

August 2, 2024

A man faces serious charges in Auckland after an alleged "violent kidnapping and assault" of two men in Westmere last month.

The incident occurred on the night of July 2, police said this morning.

Two men were "allegedly lured to the area under the guise of buying a vehicle".

"These two men were subjected to an horrific ordeal over a number of hours," acting Detective Senior Sergeant Logan Jackson said.

"On arrival at a meeting point in Westmere, the men were allegedly forced into a waiting vehicle, forced to withdraw money, and were subjected to an assault."

The pair were both hospitalised – and a 21-year-old man has now been charged.

He's set to appear in Auckland District Court today, accused of two counts of kidnapping, aggravated robbery, aggravated wounding, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and assaulting with intent to injure.

"These are serious offences," Jackson said. Police will oppose bail and "cannot rule out" further charges.

And last month's alleged crime followed "another incident in similar circumstances in early June" in Sandringham, he added.

Two men are already before the court accused of kidnapping over that incident. Police are still investigating.

"Like our community we are appalled when violent offending takes place, and as police we will continue to hold violent offending to account and oppose bail for those who are involved."
