Vehicle seized after man dies on Northland highway near Waimamaku

Emergency services responded to a report of a person located injured on State Highway 12, in Waimamaku shortly before 9am.

Police have seized a ute after a man who may have been struck by a vehicle on a Northland highway died this morning.

A man was found seriously injured on the roadside at State Highway 12 near Waimamaku shortly before 9am on Thursday.

"Despite efforts from first responders the person died at the scene," a police spokesperson said.

Staff conducted a scene investigation and interviews with people in relation to the incident.

As part of their inquiries, a nearby property has been "secured".

"Police have seized a 2024 white double cab Toyota Hilux Utility, with a large black bull bar on the front and a flat deck on the back," a spokesperson said.

"Police are speaking with a person of interest who is assisting with our inquiries."

Anyone with who was travelling on State Highway 12 this morning between 7.45am and 8.45am should contact police.

"Motorists who may have dashcam footage or saw either the vehicle, or a person walking, on the road near rapid numbers 6700-6900 are urged to contact police if you have not already done so."

Waimamaku is a rural community based along the banks of the Waimamaku River, south of the Hokianga Harbour on the Far North's west coast.

The area of interest to police was 4km south of the township.
