"Persistent" and cold easterlies are expected over the southern South Island from Monday, bringing heavy rain and possible heavy snow above 500 metres to Otago and Southland.

MetService issued a heavy snow watch from 3pm on Monday to 6am on Tuesday for inland areas of Otago and Southland, including eastern Fiordland.

There was a moderate chance the watch could be upgraded to a warning, the forecaster added.

A heavy rain watch has also been issued for eastern Otago from noon on Monday to 6am on Tuesday, MetService said.

"Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions possible."

There was a high chance this would be upgraded to a warning, it added.
