A German police officer who lost his badge after stealing cheese from an overturned truck has lost his appeal in court.
The officer was called to the scene of a crash where a truck had overturned, news agency Reuters reports.
Instead of securing the scene, the court said he drove up to the side of the truck and ordered a rescue worker to hand him nine 20kg packages of cheese worth around 554 euros (NZ$979).
The officer took some of the parcels to his office, but the location of the remaining boxes was unknown.
Police assumed the officer had kept “four parcels for himself or his friends and relatives”.
At an appeals court, the officer denied liking cheddar or taking a nibble on it.
He said the cheese was “practically worthless” as it had not been chilled and would have gone to waste.
Ultimately, however, his appeal failed.
