The All Blacks are heading to the home of the Highlanders for their first Test match under new coach Scott Robertson, however only one Highlander will get the chance to play in front of his home fans.

Ethan de Groot is the only Highlander selected in the squad and is hoping to make an appearance under the roof as the All Blacks open their 2024 season against England on Saturday.

The Highlanders captain told Breakfast this morning he's not getting comfortable after being selected.

"It's always good being back home, it feels weird being the only Highlander but it's a privilege to be in here as the competition for places is always strong," de Groot said.

"When I'm here I'm not getting comfortable and I'm trying to earn the right to play every week."

In preparation for the England Test series, de Groot has had his first taste of training under Robertson, with the prop admitting he's enjoyed Razor's unique style of coaching.

"I wouldn't say he's intense but he's extremely detailed in what he's saying and what he wants from us. I've really enjoyed his coaching style."

The 25-year-old has made 22 appearances for the All Blacks after making his debut against Fiji in 2021.

When asked what it's like to have such a high-profile match in Dunedin, de Groot quipped that it would be good for a Test to be played further south.

"One more step would be Invercargill which would be a dream come true … but it's always good to get a game down here and good for our fans as well."
