An Air New Zealand plane has been hit by lightning en route to Bali and returned to Auckland.

Flight NZ64 took off from Auckland Airport at 11am on Friday, bound for Denpasar International Airport, but was turned back a little over an hour later, according to data from FlightRadar24.

The plane landed in Auckland safely and was undergoing standard engineering checks.

As a result of the plane diverting back to Auckland, flight NZ65 from Denpasar to Auckland has been cancelled, Air New Zealand told 1News in a statement.

Head of flight operations Hugh Pearce said lightning strikes were "not uncommon".

"Our aircraft are designed with this in mind and our pilots train for this scenario."

Air New Zealand was working to re-accommodate customers in both Auckland and Bali on the next available flights.

Flight radar data published online showed the plane turning around over the Tasman before returning to Auckland.

Air New Zealand announced year-round flights to the Indonesian island just last week.

It currently flew direct to Bali from Auckland five to seven times a week between April and October and would operate two to three a week between November and March.
