The death of a man who went overboard on a Wellington ferry has been referred to the Independent Policy Conduct Authority (IPCA).
It comes as Stuff today reported the man was understood to be the subject of police scrutiny around the time of his death.
The ferry was travelling towards Days Bay, Eastbourne from Queens Wharf and left just after 6am on May 24.
The man was the sole passenger on the service and was no longer on board upon arrival in Days Bay.
His body was found on May 28 after an extensive search involving the Navy.
Today, police said the death of the man is not being treated as suspicious, and has been referred to the coroner.
"We can confirm the matter has been referred to the IPCA."
The man was described as being in his 40s, fair-skinned, around 180cm tall with darker hair.
