Lanes reopen after fleeing driver caught on SH1 in Auckland

"Please pass with care and expect delays," NZTA Waka Kotahi says.

A fleeing driver has been arrested on Auckland's Northern Motorway after an hour-long ordeal that resulted in a tyre spiking and collision with police cars.

Southbound lanes on State Highway 1 were blocked earlier tonight, near Wairau Valley, as officers took the person into custody. They have since reopened.

However, one lane was again closed just before 7pm for "vehicle recovery", according to NZTA.

Long delays are now expected for North Shore motorists heading towards the city.

The incident began at about 4.45pm when the driver "failed to stop for police when signalled to do so" on the Northern Motorway.

"Police had concerns for the wellbeing of the driver and maintained observations of the vehicle, eventually spiking the tires and bringing it to a stop near the Oteha Valley on and off ramps," a police spokesperson told 1News just before 7pm.

Nobody was injured during the incident but three police cars "were damaged after the fleeing driver collided with them in the process of being brought to a stop."

"Charges are being considered.

"Police wish to thank motorists for their patience while this incident was resolved, delays are still being experienced on the roading network but are expected to clear soon."

NZTA Waka Kotahi issued an alert to drivers over lane closures earlier.
