One person has died after a car collided with a tree in the Bay of Plenty last night.
Police responded to the single-vehicle crash on State Highway 35 near Omaiho around 8.40pm on Sunday.
"Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the person died at the scene.", a spokesperson said.
Hato Hone St John said it responded to the crash at 8.40pm on Sunday with two first response units and one ambulance.
"We were not required for transportation," a spokesperson said.
Fire and Emergency NZ were called to the crash at 9.20pm on Sunday.
Three crews attended, with the brigade setting up lights to assist police.
The Serious Crash Unit attended and inquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
It is the second fatality of the King's Birthday weekend road toll period which began at 4pm on Friday and ends at 6am on Tuesday.
The highest road toll in recent years occurred in 2016, when 11 people were killed in crashes over King's Birthday weekend across New Zealand's roading network.
