A US couple got their hands on about $162,000 in cash after they pulled up a safe while "magnet fishing" at a New York City lake last week.
James Kane and Barbie Agostini had been magnet fishing since the pandemic, referring to it as the "poor man's treasure hunting".
The couple run a YouTube channel called Let's Get Magnetic where they post hauls from various bodies of water throughout the New York City area.
Using a neodymium magnet and a fishing rod, the pair lifted the old safe out of the depths of Flushing Meadows Corona Park's lake.
They managed to open the safe and found the cash bundled in $100 bills, though the money was damaged by water.
Kane told NY1 they had found safes before but no one expected to find that amount of cash.
"We pulled it out and it was two stacks of freaking hundreds."
The couple contacted the New York police department about their discovery and were told they were allowed to keep the cash.
"There was no IDs, no way to find the original person in the safe so they were like 'well, congratulations'.
"I couldn't believe it, I lost it."
NYPD officers at the scene told them they had "never ever heard of anything like this".
