Watch: Shane van Gisbergen kicks rugby ball into crowd after NASCAR win

June 2, 2024

Kiwi NASCAR driver Shane van Gisbergen celebrated his first full-time NASCAR Xfinity victory in classic Kiwi fashion – kicking a rugby ball into the crowd.

After overtaking leader Justin Allgaier following a late caution, van Gisbergen secured the win at the Portland road course.

After seeing the chequered flag, van Gisbergen treated the fans to some burnouts before hopping out of the car for his post-race interview.

Before that, he managed to sign a rugby ball with “New Zealand” written on it – booting it into the crowd over the catch fence.

“Let me kick this ball,” he told the interviewer.

“That’s a first,” the interviewer said after the kick.

Speaking about the race, van Gisbergen said: “What a day. It was really cool. We had some great racing.”

“That was so much fun.”

The series moves to the road course at Sonoma next weekend.
