A woman has narrowly avoided being hit by a car after it careened onto the footpath outside a restaurant in Auckland's Takapuna.

In CCTV footage supplied to 1News, Botticelli employee Karen Edde can be seen leaving the premises on Anzac Street around 10.30pm on Wednesday, May 29.

As she spoke on the phone, a white BMW car mounted the footpath at speed and barrelled towards her.

Edde, who is also a mum-of-two, told 1News she felt "lucky" to have jumped back just in time to avoid being hit.

"I just saw it coming and my reaction was just run back to the restaurant. It didn't seem real. I honestly thought it was gonna come inside the restaurant.

Edde said the aftermath of the scary experience was horrible and she "couldn't stop crying".

'I felt paralysed'

"It took me a bit to recover mentally. I had a adrenaline rush — it was horrible. I felt paralysed and my whole body was tingling."

She said she feels better after a day off work to recover from the shock.

"Now I'm just happy that nothing happened, but [I] can't stop thinking about what could've happened."

Edde said the person drove off without stopping and has she since filed a police report.

Business owner Diliana, who did not want her last name used, said it was an "absolute shock" to find out one of her workers was nearly hit right outside her restaurant.

"I watched it on the cameras 1000 times. We tried to zoom in and all sorts of different options to see the number plate."

Diliana said she had just finished for the night, leaving two of her staff to lock up when she received a call about the shocking near-miss.

"[My worker] was absolutely shaking. I sent my husband back straight away to look after her and take her home," she said.

Diliana said she did not believe the incident was the result of illegal street racing, but simply someone who lost control of their vehicle.

"One of the reasons this happened is because the council removed a pole that used to be there," she said.

"They need to do something about it. They need to put it back, because this is actually scary."

In a statement, police said they encouraged anyone who witnessed unsafe driving behaviour to report it.

"Please contact police immediately on 111 if it is happening now."
