Police have identified the man who is believed to have fallen overboard from a Wellington ferry on Friday morning.

A massive search effort was launched when the ferry arrived in Days Bay, Eastbourne, having left Queens Wharf just after 6am.

The man was the sole passenger on the service and was no longer on board upon arrival in Days Bay.

Police said this morning the man had now been identified, but was yet to be located.

The man is described as being in his 40s, fair-skinned, around 180cm tall with darker hair.

"Police are providing support to the man’s family who we will continue to update as the search progresses, at this time we will not be releasing details of his identity," Detective Senior Sergeant Rachel Boyd said.

"The search recommenced yesterday with a potential location of interest identified in the Wellington Harbour.

"The police maritime unit will continue coordinating a search today assisted by the Royal New Zealand Navy."

The passenger was reported to be on the 6am Queens Wharf to Days Bay sailing on Friday.

Friday's search saw up to 14 vessels and a rescue helicopter in action at its peak.

East by West Ferries general manager Mat Jonsson told 1News Friday the crew of the ferry issued a mayday call and began the search as soon as they became aware the passenger was missing.

"We called in a second harbour ferry to assist with the search, which was joined by other vessels responding to the mayday."

Police are asking anyone with information that may assist to call 105.
