Some Aucklanders have spent the morning mopping up and worrying about where they’ll stay tonight after heavy rain led to flooding in some parts of the city.

Fire and Emergency NZ said it received calls about 67 weather-related events between 11pm and 2am overnight in the city.

Police also recorded calls for 36 weather-related events in Auckland between 6pm Monday and 6am Tuesday.

Houses were flooded in St Heliers and Mount Wellington, among other areas.

One Mount Wellington resident, who asked not to be named, said he hadn’t “experienced such flooding in my whole life”.

He said he was woken up by his neighbours at around midnight, who said the water was rising fast.

“When I got out of the room, everything was filled up with water,” he said.

“I was feeling terrified. I was feeling scared.”

He said his house had flooded a few months ago, but “it [wasn’t] as bad as this”.

“I was not expecting this much."

Now, he can’t stay in the house as the floor is too damaged, and will have to stay in emergency accommodation until he can return.

The resident said he gets anxious when it rains now.

“You’re always feeling anxious, terrified, desperate.

“Getting worried that when it’s coming up, what are your options? What are you going to do?”

Another Mount Wellington resident, Shirley Delos Reyes, told 1News that she had never experienced flooding before.

“I didn’t really feel their rain because I thought it was just the normal rain that always happens here.”

She said that once it reached 2am, the water was “inside our house”.

“It’s all filled with water.”
