London sword rampage: Man charged with murdering teenage boy

May 2, 2024
London's Metropolitan Police have released a photo of Daniel Anjorin, 14, who was killed in the attack.

A man has been charged with murdering a 14-year-old boy during a sword rampage in London this week.

The man is dual Spanish-Brazilian national Marcus Aurelio Arduini Monzo, 36, of Newham, London's Metropolitan Police said.

Monzo has been accused of murdering Daniel Anjorin and injuring four others, including two police officers – and has also been charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of grievous bodily harm, aggravated burglary and possession of a bladed article, police said.

He would appear in Barkingside Magistrates' Court overnight Thrusday (NZ time). Family members of the victims have been informed.

When asked about reports one of the police officers had nearly lost her hand, Commissioner Mark Rowley earlier said "that's not a million miles away", adding surgeons spent hours "basically putting her arm back together".

Anjorin was reportedly walking to school when he was attacked. He died in hospital shortly after.

"This is an incredibly tragic incident that has resulted in a young boy losing his life and his family devastated. On behalf of the family, I would ask that their privacy is respected," Detective Chief Inspector Larry Smith said.

"This is a complex investigation due to the number of crime scenes, forensic evidence, hours of CCTV footage and witnesses we need to speak to. I know that many people will want answers and we are working to provide them as soon as we can.

"I would also echo previous calls for patience as my officers carry out a painstaking investigation to deliver justice for Daniel, his family, those injured and the wider community."

Witnesses were "no doubt terrified" by what they say, Smith added.
