Heavy rain has been forecast to lash central New Zealand overnight.
It comes as a slow-moving front is expected to hover over Wellington and North Canterbury as a low develops, according to MetService.
The slow-moving front is likely to bring a period of moderate to heavy rain to some places.
Thunderstorms may develop, bringing localised heavy falls which may cause surface flooding.
A heavy rain watch is in place for Wellington, Porirua, Hutt and Upper Hutt Cities, the Kāpiti Coast District, and Wairarapa south of Martinborough until 7am tomorrow; and Canterbury north of Amberley, including Kaikōura District, until 4am tomorrow.
Rainfall may approach warning criteria during this time, MetService said.
