Residents living in University of Auckland accommodation have been asked to pledge not to pay rent from May 1 in response to an annual 8% increase.

Students for Fair Rent founder Matthew Lee told Breakfast the increase "outstrips" inflation, wage growth and average rent prices in Auckland Central.

"We are full-time students, we should be studying full-time and not having to work part-time just to pay for rent. That doesn't even include tuition or other utilities."

Lee said the cost of staying in university accommodation should be more in line with the average rent in the city — $230 per week.

When asked why students did not just live in the cheaper accommodation, Lee said halls provided a feeling of safety, a sense of community and proximity to the university.

A petition was submitted to the university last year with 1500 signatures and a meeting was held, but this was not "as constructive" as Lee hoped.

Residents living in University of Auckland accommodation have been asked to pledge not to pay rent from May 1 in response to an annual 8% increase.

"It's clear the university is not going to acknowledge this as a real problem, and that's why we're going on strike."

A University of Auckland spokesperson said increases in rent at the university have been lower than most other universities over the past four years.

"Additionally, in 2024, the rent for catered rooms at both the University of Otago and the University of Canterbury was higher than those charged at the University of Auckland, despite Auckland being the most expensive city in which to live."

However, costs associated with student accommodation have increased at a higher rate than inflation.

"We work hard to provide a safe and supportive living environment conducive to success at university, at the lowest possible price.

"Students sign a residential agreement when they move into university accommodation, knowing the cost for the academic year."
