An Air New Zealand passenger has required surgery after sustaining an injury during turbulence on a flight from Bali to Auckland earlier this week.

One passenger was injured on NZ65 from Bali to Auckland on Tuesday, said chief operational integrity and safety officer Captain David Morgan.

"They were attended to by a doctor onboard the aircraft. No other passenger injuries were reported to our crew."

The incident is understood to have occurred about 30 minutes into the flight, leaving the passenger with a broken leg.

The NZ Herald reports the passenger, 47, was returning to his seat from the toilet when the plane "dropped".

Hato Hone St John received a call at 5.40am on Wednesday about an incident at Auckland International Airport.

"We responded with one ambulance which took one patient in moderate condition to Middlemore Hospital," a spokesperson said.
