US rapper J.Cole has done a complete U-turn following the release of a diss track about fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar — now apologising for the "lame" and "goofy" response.
Cole's song entitled 7 Minute Drill was released as a response to Lamar's guest verse on Future and Metro Boomin's single Like That, where Lamar fired shots at Drake and J. Cole for designating him as one of "the big three" names in hip hop.
In a fiery verse on the song, Lamar declared there was no "big three - it's just big me".
This prompted Cole's response on 7 Minute Drill, who said Lamar had "fallen off like the Simpsons" and blasted his latest album as "tragic," according to BBC.
During a headlining performance at his Dreamville Festival in North Carolina, Cole told the crowd he "felt terrible" about the track and called his own response "goofy".
"I ain't gonna lie to y'all the past two days felt terrible," he said.
In a complete U-turn, Cole "asked for forgiveness from Lamar" and called his own song a "mis-step" and said he hoped to "get back to my true path".
He continued by stating that he felt pressured to publicly respond to Lamar after witnessing the discourse it incited.
BBC reports that while unusual, it is not unheard of, for rappers to retract diss tracks after their release.
