Cannabis decriminalised in Germany from today

Germany is relaxing its laws around cannabis, with the drug being partly decriminalised from today.

People over 18 years old will be able to possess up to 25 grams of cannabis in public, the BBC reports.

That equates to just under an ounce worth of weed, a unit it is typically sold in to more heavy users.

Adults will also be allowed to grow up to three plants per household.

However, people won't be allowed to smoke joints within sight of schools, sports centres or in "pedestrian zones" between 7am and 8pm.

From July 1 this year social cannabis clubs with up to 500 members will be able to be established.

The new laws don't include provisions for Amsterdam style cannabis cafes to be operated.

Some in the German police force don't agree with the new legislation, believing it won't eliminate black market demand.

"We assume that the black market will be strengthened," Alexander Poitz from Gewerkschaft der Polizei (GdP), the German Police Union, told the BBC.

He went on to add that demand will outstrip supply, meaning criminal groups will still be involved in the distribution of the drug.

New Zealand held a cannabis referendum in October 2020 where legalisation narrowly lost the vote.
