Tourist's excuse for doing 168km/h doesn't stack up with NSW police

A 35-year-old international driver was clcoked travelling at 168km/h in a 100km/h zone.

A driver recorded travelling at 168km/h in Australia claimed he was speeding to overtake a car — but NSW police argued there was no car there.

The 35-year-old had been sightseeing in the Northern Tablelands and was on an international licence when pulled over by police.

Police pulled the vehicle over after radar clocked him going 168km/h in an 100km/h zone near Walcha, 425km north of Sydney.

The man blamed his excessive speed on the fact he had just overtaken a car.

Police said they had not seen any other vehicles near the Kia when they pulled it over.

He was issued an NZD $3048 fine for exceeding the speed limit by over 45km/h.

His licence was also suspended for six months, but this could be extended due to the total of his demerit points.
