SH5 near Rotorua reopens following fatal crash, road toll sits at 5

One person has died and another is seriously injured after a crash on State Highway 5 just south of Rotorua this morning.

The crash in Whakarewarewa involving two vehicles was reported to police shortly after 5am.

"A second person sustained serious injuries," a spokesperson said.

The road has since reopened after motorists were asked to take alternative routes.

Waka Kotahi advised light vehicles going northbound to detour via SH5 and Waikite Valley Rd, Corbett Rd, Rehi Rd, Waikauakau Rd and SH30.
