Couple hospitalised after Aussie Bunnings sausage sizzle fire

March 31, 2024

A barbecue fire at a Bunnings sausage sizzle in Adelaide saw a couple rushed to hospital this afternoon.

A man sustained injuries while pulling his wife to safety when flames erupted from a barbecue around 12.30pm (local time), 9News reports.

The blaze is believed to have ignited due to a gas bottle being knocked over, but the exact cause is still under investigation.

Witnesses reported a 50-year-old woman working the sausage sizzle fainted, falling onto the gas bottle which then landed on the barbecue.

"She fell on the floor, and next minute it went boom," Ernie Reichstein told 9News.

"They (the flames) were hot too, very hot."

The woman was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious burns to her face.

Her husband was also transported to the same hospital with minor burns.

Bunnings released a statement that said staff and a customer acted quickly to contain the fire, "using nearby extinguishers to contain the fire".
