A surfer has been airlifted to hospital after falling off his board and hitting a rock near Raglan this morning.

Emergency services – including an Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Surf Life Saving crew – were called to the scene around 11.30am, an Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust spokesperson told 1News.

"Our critical care paramedics were winched onto rocks to care for him due to access issues."

A man in his 40s was airlifted to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition, a St John spokesperson said.
