Police have impounded a car after it performed a burnout on Gisborne's rainbow crossing last night in the third incident this week.

Officers reviewed CCTV footage and identified a car doing a burnout on the crossing around 8.30pm on Friday, a spokesperson said.

"The car was located by an officer at 2.20am today and impounded."

A witness told 1News there were a few tire marks and that the damage was "not too bad, but really obvious."

Gisborne mayor Rehette Stoltz said she was happy police are addressing "unsafe, illegal" behaviour.

"I support the police's swift action to curb dangerous behaviour in our CBD."

Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki reposted a video of the incident to the social media platform X.

"The great pushback has begun," he captioned the video.

It comes as the crossing was defaced with white paint on Monday evening by Destiny Church protesters.

On Wednesday, five people were arrested with paint cans after the crossing had been restored.
