A second man has been charged following a fatal brawl at a 21st birthday party in Gisborne over the weekend.
It comes as police this afternoon named the two men who died in the altercation on Lytton St on Saturday.
They were Kane Wiremu Te Paa, 30, of Wainuiomata, and Chrysler Stevens-Mark, 21, of Gisborne.
"Our thoughts are with Kane and Chrysler's whānau," Detective Inspector Dave de Lange said this evening.
The party had been a birthday celebration for Stevens-Mark.
"Prior to uninvited guests arriving, the partygoers had been having a great night and there were no problems," he said.
"This is a tragedy that didn't need to happen."
A 25-year-old man was discharged from Gisborne Hospital today. He was taken into custody and charged with assault.
Police confirmed the man was one of two uninvited guests who arrived at the party shortly before the brawl began.
He is expected to appear in the Gisborne District Court tomorrow afternoon.
A 29-year-old Gisborne man was earlier charged with injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Te Paa and Stevens-Mark's whānau are now planning their tangi after post-mortems were completed this afternoon.
"At this time, police are not able to elaborate on the cause of death, beyond the fact that both men died from injuries sustained during the altercation," de Lange said.
He said while police will offer support to the families as they prepare for the tangi, "this is a deeply personal process".
"Once arrangements have been made, we will look at how we can provide support as they farewell their loved ones."
A karakia has taken place at the scene of the incident, and is expected to be released back to whānau this evening.
De Lange said there will be a continued police presence as they carry out reassurance patrols in the community over the coming days.
He also appealed for witnesses to come forward, noting that there "have been no reported incidents relating to the events of Sunday night".
"Police would still like to hear from anyone who was at the party on Saturday evening, or anyone who has photos or video of the party or altercation."
