A motorcyclist has died in a crash on State Highway 30 in Bay of Plenty on Saturday.

Officers were called to the crash between the motorcycle and a car near the intersection with Luxton Road, Awakeri just before 6pm yesterday.

"The road remains closed while the Serious Crash Unit examines the crash scene," a spokesperson confirmed.

Motorists are asked to continue taking alternative routes where possible.
