Widespread outrage after Greek airline loses one-eyed kitten

March 14, 2024

Social media is alight with criticism for Greece's Aegean Airlines after a kitten's mysterious disappearance in transit.

The Greek carrier has addressed the issue in statement, saying it's doing "everything possible" to find Rodri the one-eyed cat.

Rodri was on her way from Crete to Germany for an operation on her good eye. But when the plane landed in Athens for a layover, her crate was found damaged – and Rodri was nowhere to be found.

It's now been days and there's still not a trace. Owner Mary Gomes led online outrage over the incident.

"None of the staff involved supported me, there was no empathy," Gomes said on Facebook.

"We didn't rescue her out of the rubbish, out of a miserable life on the streets, to lose her," she added.

"I DEMAND Rodri back. I need to see her."

The airline's response to the backlash emphasised its "exhaustive attempts" to track down Rodri.

"From the moment we realised that Rodri was missing, we swiftly launched extensive efforts, coordinating with airport authorities and deploying our dedicated airport personnel in search of the kitten," the statement read.

"We are fully committed to persisting in our search efforts.

"The safety and wellbeing of all animals travelling with us are of utmost importance, and we are thoroughly investigating how Rodri's carrier was damaged to prevent such incidents in the future."

But social media users aren't convinced.

"You LOST A CAT?!?!?! How the hell did you manage to even do this," one X user wrote.

"Prove that you followed the handling process properly!" another said.

"What a horrible nightmare! Your staff were negligent and now a poor blind kitten is missing and suffering," a third comment added.

And Aegean hit out at an allegedly incorrect rumour swirling on the internet.

"We also want to clarify that a €100 (NZ$178) compensation offer circulating on social media, falsely attributed to Aegean, is from a fake account and has no connection to our organisation.

"We urge our community to rely on information shared through our official channels.

"We appreciate your understanding and support as we continue our efforts to resolve this matter.

"Our thoughts are with Rodri and its guardian during this difficult time."
